Consider the palette as a whole
In the kitchen photograph, blue ceramics sit beside terracotta, an oak worktop and exposed brick. Each material contributes to the palette before a paint colour is chosen. Timber, stone and fabric all contribute colour. Starting with those larger surfaces makes it easier to choose paint and smaller accents that connect the room.
Texture changes the experience
A wool loop, a smooth metal fitting and a timber grain can share warm tones while offering very different sensations. That variation gives a restrained palette depth.
Let light join the conversation
Look at samples together in the room, at different times of day. The relationships matter more than how any one sample looks alone. A scheme should support the way you want the room to feel and function.
